JAUNE MYSTÉRIEUX truly lives up to its name: its colour seems to change with every movement.
This small 15mm vintage jewel button is crafted from translucent honey-yellow glass, shaped into a beautifully rounded cabochon. As the light moves across its surface, delicate pink, blue, green and golden iridescent reflections appear, floating over the warm colour like a pearlescent veil.
This play of light is what makes the button so distinctive. At different angles, the glass shifts from golden yellow to honey and pale amber, while its surface develops an almost opalescent glow.
Its design is beautifully simple: no ornament and no decorative motif. The glass, colour and light become the decoration. This purity gives the button a surprisingly contemporary presence despite its vintage origins.
The reverse reveals concentric moulded rings and a metal shank embedded into the glass, reflecting its traditional construction. Based on these characteristics, a mid-20th-century date, probably circa 1940, appears plausible, although the precise decade cannot be established from the button alone.
Sourced from original French deadstock, JAUNE MYSTÉRIEUX can bring a luminous jewellery detail to a jacket, cardigan, blouse or dress, or become the finishing touch to a contemporary couture design.
A tiny 15mm button with an almost liquid appearance, suspended somewhere between honey, light and opalescent reflections.
